If you would like to start my amputee journey from the beginning click here    Having a wheelchair made a huge difference. Even for basic needs like needing the toilet, it meant I didn’t have to buzz a nurse to cart me to the toilet and then back again. In the middle of the night I could hop out of bed and silently wheel across the room like a physically challenged ninja. Now I had a small taste of freedom I wanted more. I wasn’t attached to any bags or tubes anymore, so I was good to go. I had some visitors so we were goingRead More →

If you would like to start my amputee journey from the beginning click here    Now my nerve block was out, and they were happy that everything had gone to plan, it was time for me to go back up to a normal ward. I had really got on with the people that were in my room in the major trauma unit and the nurses knew this. As I’d had a bit of a hard time coping with the amputation, I think the nurses took pity on me and kept my bed free for me so I could be in the same room. At the time,Read More →

If you would like to start my amputee journey from the beginning click here    The high dependency unit was not a pleasant place to be. By the time I had got on the ward it was about 10:30 so all the lights were off as it was past our bedtime. The ward is stupidly hot, this is because muscle and skin grafts take and bind better over a certain temperature reducing the risk of infection. Pain in my leg wasn’t really an issue as you are given what’s called a nerve block; a small IV is put into your nerve right at the endRead More →

If you would like to start my amputee journey from the beginning click here    So, the decision was made.  The amputation was scheduled for first thing in the morning, and I was nil by mouth. Sleeping that night was obviously tricky. Even though I had asked lots of people a lot of different questions, I still had no idea what to expect. I didn’t really know the process of an amputation and what comes directly after; the surgeons and the nursing staff were telling me, but it just wasn’t sinking in. As morning came round, I was only able to suck water from aRead More →

If you would like to start my amputee journey from the beginning click here  It has been a while since my last post, I do apologise, I’ve been a bad blogger! Recovery life has kind of got in the way due to constant rehabilitation, doctors’ consultations, psychological recovery and more surgery looming, but more on that later.  The decision… So, I had a day or so to think about the situation I was in, and I was well aware of what needed to be done but now I actually needed to say it. I had frequent visits from the psychologist to try and help meRead More →

If you would like to start my amputee journey from the beginning click here    When I arrived at the hospital I was taken into Resus where the doctors and nurses needed to look at my injuries more closely. The paramedics gave a very detailed account of my injuries and the accident to the staff then wished me well and said goodbye. By this point, I was wired up to all sorts of machines and had cannulas in both arms, as you would expect I was very out of it. I don’t really remember any of this part very well, I was very, drugged up.Read More →
